Collection description Cozumel is in Caribbean Sea along the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Maya first settled Cozumel in the early part of the 1st millennium AD, older Preclassic Olmec artifacts have been found on the island as well. The Maya Moon Goddess, "Ix Chel," was a sacred figure and the temples were considered a place of pilgrimage, especially by women desiring fertility. The island has a number of ruins. San Gervasio, which is located near the center of the island, is the location where a large number of ruins remain.
Isla Mujeres , Spanish for "Women Island" (formally “Isla de Mujeres”), an island off the Yucatán Peninsula coast in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The island was a sacred place in Pre-Columbian times to the Maya goddess of childbirth and medicine, "Ixchel." Named "Isla Mujeres" by the Spanish in the 16th century upon their arrival because of the many images of goddesses.
