Aké Photographs
Collection description
"Aké (ah-keh) from 'Place of Reeds' in Yucatec Mayan."
"Aké is an archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization, located in the municipality of Tixkokob, in the Mexican state of Yucatán."
"North-Central region of Yucatán Peninsula, 25 miles east of Mérida, capital of the Yucatán Peninsula, in Mexico. The Aké ruins Aké lie within the property of a sprawling 19th century Henequen Hacienda."
"'El Palacio' (The Palace) is the site’s most impressive feature, and is a single massive temple on a step-pyramidal platform supporting thirty-six large-stone columns, made up of huge drum-shaped stone blocks, which range in height from fourteen to sixteen feet high. The remains of a 137-foot-wide stairway made up of huge, flat stone slabs, each four-feet long."
"One other notable feature of Aké is its system of pre-Columbian sacbeo'ob (raised limestone roads) that offered walking access to the nearby Izamal and other settlements in the region."
"The Aké ruins were first described and illustrated in 'Incidents of Travel in Yucatan' Vol. 2, by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in 1840." -- Payne Johnson.
