A rising star, Los Angeles, 1988. El Mercado, rear parking lot, 1st Street just east of Lorena Street, [Boyle Heights]. A portrait of actor and director Edward James Olmos that was commissioned for use on the cover of Time Magazine on July 11, 1988. Olmos grew up in East Los Angeles. His credits include the television ahow "Miami Vice" and the starring role in the movie, "Stand and Deliver," about local high school calculus teacher Jaime Escalante. More recently, Olmos made his directorial debut in 1992 with "American Me." By Jose-Luis Gonzalez. Sponsored by Time Magazine. -- Dunitz, Street gallery, rev. 2nd ed., p. 307, #54.
