Exterior view of the Jones residence at the northwest corner of Main and Fifth Streets looking north on Main, ca.1897

Description

Photograph of the Jones residence at the northwest corner of Main and Fifth Streets looking north on Main, Los Angeles, ca.1897. The residence of John H. Jones is visible to the right, its architecture, which appears to be early Victorian with a clapboard veneer, is mostly obscured by the foliage of a large tree on the sidewalk. The property is surrounded by a short picket fence (possibly wrought-iron), approximately three feet in height, and the yard is filled with small topiary trees. What appears to be a telephone pole is visible in the left foreground. The sidewalk, lined by trees similar to the one blocking the view of the house, extends back and away from the camera at right. The street does not appear to be paved. The Rosslyn Hotel was eventually built on this site.
