Photograph of first electric arc lamp-mast (electric light pole) in Los Angeles, located on the Baker Block, Main Street, north from Commercial Street, ca.1887. The lamp provided lighting equivalent to four 3000 candle-powered lamps and it was turned on for the first time on December 30, 1881. The lamp stands at approximately eight-stories tall. Halfway up is an island where a man is standing. Mild vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow in the streets below. A majority of the buildings are three-stories tall.
