The leftmost man stands at the boat's helm while the other sits aft. In the background to the right, a cluster of wooden buildings stand on risers at the water's edge: a square home to the left, while several flatter buildings appear to make up a unit to the right, from which a deck or wrap-around porch extends, with steps down to the water. A dune stands visible to the far left.
