Passenger steamer Relief near Long Beach coastline, ca.1930

Description

Photograph of passenger steamer Relief near Long Beach coastline, ca.1930. At center, the large steamer is seen moving through the calm water. Two decks can be seen on the side of the ship, and several columns and rails are visible on each deck. Also, numerous windows and doors can be seen leading to the interior of the steamer. Several passengers can be seen moving along both decks of the ship. At the top of the upper deck, three large lifeboats are visible. On either side of the upper deck, a large pole and several wires can be seen. Between these poles, a tall smoke stack is visible emitting a thick cloud of black smoke into the sky. In the lower right foreground is a portion of another ship with both civilians and naval personnel visible, while buildings are visible along the shore in the background. Text on the back of the photo suggests that this vessel may have been a naval hospital ship; the name seems to support this.
