Description

Photograph of a close-up view of Pacific Electric hotel trolley car, ca.1900. At center, a large Pacific Electric trolley car is seen facing to the left. The body of the car is lightly-colored and rectangular in form. Four windows can be seen lining the face of the car, while thirteen windows line the side of the car. Above the front face of the trolley, a small rectangular sign reads: "Maryland Special". Similarly, the side of the car is painted with the words: "Hotels: Virginia-Maryland". Atop the trolley's surface, a wire is seen extending to something above the car. In the far background, several utility poles and buildings can be seen. In the foreground, multiple curved metal tracks lie adjacent to the trolley.
Description on the back of the photoprint reads, "Old PE Hotel car ran between Maryland hotel in Pasadena, and Virginia hotel in Long Beach. Car was painted pure white with gold leaf lettering. The fastest regularly scheduled car on old PE (pre 1911) system. Company records show official clocked speed at right close to 109 MPH".
