- Chinese Historical Society Santa Barbara artifacts
Collection Description
A collection of 139 artifacts which form part of a larger collection of artifacts systematically excavated in 1992 during a seismic upgrading by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation of an old adobe structure that for about 25 years housed a Chinese laundry from about 1885 to 1905. Materials recovered from the dig represent a valuable resource for reconstructing a narrow range of Chinese working class daily life in Santa Barbara during that period.
A map of the historic center of Santa Barbara shows the vicinity of the excavation at the adobe (near the intersection of State Street and East Carrillo Street). The map is bounded by: Figueroa Street (top), De La Guerra Street (bottom), State Street (left), Garden Street (right).
