The Red Lion Tavern, Silver Lake, 2014 |
Description |
Red Lion Tavern owner and staff interviews at the Red Lion Tavern, 2366 Glendale Boulevard, Silver Lake, 2014 August 16. The SLHC interviewed Aidas J. Mattis and Edita L. Mattis (owners) and Roswita Mattern, Elsa Hohls and Elke Christopher (longtime employees). The group related the history of the iconic Red Lion Tavern from its beginnings as a British pub in 1959 and how it become a landmark German bar and restaurant in 1963. It was eventually purchased by Uwe Bracken and Hans Loderich in 1981, later joined by Walter Hohls. Since 2004, it has been owned by the Mattis family (mother and son), Edita met her future husband there after church one Sunday when it was a very popular place with St. Casimir Lithuanian Church parishioners. Roswita, Elsa and Elke shared stories of regular customers and their antics including one who painted a crosswalk across Glendale Boulvard so he could cross the street more safely.
