Title |
SLHC interview of Marshall Wong, Silver Lake, 2015 |
Description |
Oral history interview of Marshall Wong, Community Room, Silver Lake Library, 2411 Glendale Boulevard, Silver Lake, Los Angeles, 2015 August 17, by the Silver Lake History Collective (SLHC). Marshall grew up at 2416 West Silver Lake Dr. after 1959. His parents had to contact the seller of three lots at that location because the real estate agent was told by his company not to sell to minorities. Marshall told us the story of his family dating back to his grandfathers (both born in China ) and grandmothers (both US born) starting from Northern California to Bakersfield and eventually to LA. Marshall’s father was a colleague of Edmund “Pat” Brown and appointed as the first Chinese judge. Marshall gave us a biography of his father, written by Marshall, for our archives. We filmed photos of his family. Marshall’s parents were very involved in both the Chinese community in LA and the SL community. Marshall went to Ivanhoe and King Middle school and then to the Area H high school. His siblings went to Marshall High. Marshall speaks of discrimination against minorities that his family experienced, although they overcame quite a lot. Part of a series of oral histories "The people of Silver Lake".
