Photograph of a detail of a lithograph by an unknown artist depicting General John C. Fremont's entrance into Monterey, ca.1846. The image shows a long column of armed cavalrymen making its way across the plains near Monterey. At its front is a single rider, presumably Fremont, and the two ranks behind him are composed of Native Americans. Most of the men carry rifles, although four tall flags are visible in the formation. In the background behind the troops is a mountain range, while on the water to the left of the column is a flotilla of three large ships with their sails stowed.
