Title |
View of Second Street looking west from Main Street in Los Angeles, ca.1909-1910 |
Description |
Photograph of a view of Second Street looking west from Main Street in Los Angeles, ca.1909-1910. Second Street is at center and heads away from the viewer before disappearing into the distance. There are two sets of streetcar tracks running down the middle of the street and two streetcars are visible on the tracks at left. The sidewalks that border the road are crowded with pedestrians, and several horse-drawn wagons are visible. There are large buildings on both sides of the street, including the massive Higgins building at left that appears to be under construction. Legible signs include, from left to right, "Paint Store", "Hi-Namel Interior Varnish", "Varnish Brushes Stain Butcher's Johnson's Old English Floor Wax", "Elevators in this building", "[?]llewellyn Iron Works Not in the Trust", "A. Barman Contractor", "McIntyre", "Heath Coming", "Reservation Jas. O. Sword", "Santa Fe Station", "Tobacco", "Trust Building", "W. L. Douglas", "Painless Dentists", and "The National Bank". The large structure under construction is the Higgins Building; just next to it, the Wilcox Building cam be seen. Directly west of the Wilcox, across Spring Street, the Hollenbeck Hotel is partly visible. Opposite the Higgins Building, across the Second Street, the Newell Block (with the W. L. Douglas sign) can be seen. West of the Newell, the Los Angeles Trust Company Building is partly visible. "Peeking out" from behind the Trust Building is the Bryson-Bonebrake Building. |
