Photographic portrait of the students of the Spring Street School, Los Angeles, ca.1860-1900. The school is located on the northwest corner of Spring Street and Second Street. Mrs. Louise Hayes, the first teacher employed by the city of Los Angeles, stands behind her students to the left, in front of the school's brick building. The students are comprised of thirty-six boys and ten girls arranged in five rows with the first row sitting on the ground. Almost all the boys are wearing short pants, and all the girls wear dresses. Two African-American students are pictured.
