He is looking slightly to the right, and what appear to be two ash marks are visible on his forehead. Caption at the bottom reads "Retrato del Rev. Padre Fray Junipero Serra Apo[...] de la Alta California, tornado del original que se conserva [...] Convente de la Santa Cruz de Queretaro." The original painting was located at the Santa Cruz Convent, Queretaro, Mexico.
