Photograph (engineering notebook photoprint) looking south from point 100 feet south of Washington Street at end of Ocean Front Walk, Los Angeles County. Serious erosion was prevented here by wooden groins. Note narrow beach at low tide. This followed a 6.2 tide on 9 January 1940 accompanied by heavy ground swells and 30 foot breakers which did considerable damage to piers and ocean front property between Newport Beach and Malibu along the route of the proposed "Ocean Front Walk" location of State Route 163 between Santa Monica and Redondo. Also visible are: wooden fences, a few houses, oil derricks, ocean, part of the coast visible across the water. No legible signs.
