SHANGHAI AMERICANS OBSERVE ARMISTICE DAY
Holding a separate wreath-laying ceremony at the
War Memorial on the Bund, local Americans held their
Armistice Service at 11 a.m. yesterday. Members of
General Frederick Ward Post of the American Legion
joined with the U. S. Marines and the Daughters of
the American Revolution in the ceremony. Picture

left is Mark L. Moody, Conjmander of the American
Legion. Standing behind the Fourth Marines wreath
is Colonel J. C. Fegan, Commanding the Fourth
Marines, and Lieutenant-Colonel C. I. Murray. With

Wreaths Laid At Cenotaph By Colonel J. C. Fegan,
Commander Of American Legion, As Well As
Daughters Of American Revolution
A separate and impressive Armistice Day Service was held by the
American community yesterday
when the members of the General
Frederick Townsend Ward Post of
the American Legion joined with
Colonel J. C. Fegan, commanding
officer of the Fourth U.S. Marines,
in. laying wreaths at the War Memorial Cenotaph on the Bund. The
Daughters of the American Revolution also took part in this ceremony.
The American observance was
held at 11 a.m. and after the
wreaths were laid, Chaplain R. R.
Marken, Regimental Chaplain of
the Fourth^ Regiment U.S. Marines,
recalled to the gathering the
memory of the honoured dead,
who had fallen during the Great
War of 1914-1918.
Shortly before the hour set for
the ceremony on the Bund, members of the American; Legion assembled under their Commander,
Mr. Mark L. Moody, all wearing
Legion Caps. A detachment of 40
picked members of the Fourth
Marines arrived on the scene in
dress uniforms (under arms),
together with a bugler, and formed up in front of the Cenotaph.
Fourth Regiment, These two
officers placed ,a wreath at the foot
of the War Memorial on behalf of
the Fourth Marines. They were
followed by Mr. Mark L. Moody,
Commander of the American
Legion, and then by the representa
tives of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Something New
The members of the American
Legion stood on the right of the
Cenotaph throughout the ceremony.
After Chaplain Marken had given
his impressive address to those who
had gathered to pay respects to the
war dead . and had asked the
gathering to stand in prayer, a
Marine bugler stepped in front of
the War Memorial and sounded the
Last Post, following which the
ceremony broke-up.
Yesterday was the first time in
history that the Americans in
Shanghai have held a separate
Armistice Day Service.
