Most of the outstanding race drivers of the nation were honored last night in a special ceremony held at Los Angeles Lodge #99. Joe J. Houser, exalted Ruler announced that among the celebrities present were Pat Flaherty, winner of the 1956 Indianapolis 500 mile classic; Jimmy Bryan, National champion 1954 and 1956; motion picture star and producer Cornell Wilde, soon to be seen in Paramount's racing picture "The Devil's Hairpin"; leading lady of the same picture Jean Wallace; Roger Ward, National Stock Car Champion; Sam Hanks; Johnny Parsons; and many others".; Supplementary material continues: "'We feel that by recognizing and encouraging these drivers who risk their lives to obtain useful data in developing safer operation of our pleasure cars that we are rendering a real public service', commented Houser. 'We hope to continue this 'Off To Indianapolis' event each year with even greater participation by members of the racing fraternity and a larger showing of the latest racing and speed equipment'. Last night's program which displayed the latest cars including the Dean Van Lines Special which will be driven by Jimmy Bryan in the next 600 mile race, was under the direction of John Yates and Vince Barnett. Several United States Auto Club officials were present for the affair and witnessed the presentation of awards to Luji Lesousky, west coast Supervisor of the USAC and to A.J. Watson as the 'mechanic of the year'".
