They left tonight (3/22). Shelton, 25, is currently taking a leave of absence from his Army duties at the Persidio (sic) in San Francisco where he is Pfc., although his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Shelton, still reside here at 1627 W. 67th St., Los Angeles. Ernest, who has been an outstanding indoor athletic titleholder for many years, tied for 2nd place in the 1958 AAU meet with a 6' 6 1/2" highjump. He also held the national highjump title in 1954 and 1955 beside 1956 indoor champion. He said when he completes his time in the Army, which is about six months, he will return to Los Angeles and re-enter art school for extra training as a commercial artist. Maj. Liscomb, who is heading the tour, is the athletic director of Fort Lee, Virginia, however, his hometown in New York. Other athletes in the group include, Willie Stevens, a hurdler, of Nashville, Tenn., A & I; William Smith, a sprinter, of Detroit; Steve Barthold, of 440 and 880 race, of New York; and Jerry Welbourn, a polevaulter, with the U.S.A.F., of Philadelphia. The major said they will compete with similar teams in the various countries which are Hawaii, Japan, Formosa, Singapore, Thailand, Burma and Korea". |
