UNITED STATES COIMSMDIUTES KOREAN FLAG
We Koreans in Hawaii, on behalf of all Koreans in and out of Korea,
wish, to express our deep-hearted appreciation to the United States
Government and. to its people for the issuance of five-cent stamps commemorating the national flag of Korea. Tfhat a courageous end generous act
on the part of this Government to rank Korea with the ti^relve over-run
countries in Europe! These countries are Poland, Czechslovakia, Norway,
Luxenberg, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Greece,.Yugoslavia, Albania,
Austria and Denmark, all of these countries had been commemorated in 1943
by U.S. Postal Stamps engraved with each countries1 national flag*
"Unlucky makes luckytf is a popular Korean adage. The Korean commemoration stamp is the thirteenth of its kind. But, the Koreans can now
say that this unlucky thirteen is lucky because the commemoration stamp
is a formal answer from America to Korea1sVery for her national liberation;
and also because it is a reaffirmation of the Cairo Pledge by the
Amer ic an g ov erninent.
The feature of the Korean flag on the Commemomtion Stanp is the
nTAl KDK" and nSA. °UAYn symbolizing heaven and earth and the four corners
of the v/orld. This symbol is an expression of Korea's culture and spirit,
It sym olizes Korea's belief and hope for the eternal existence of the
nation.
In 1910, the invincible Japanese military power banished the Korean^
flag only to see it reappear under the very eyes of the Japanese Gendarmes
on March 1, 1919 in Bvery part of Korea. Since then it has won international friends who have raided it in sympathy in Chine, in Russia and
is
in some Erupean countries. Th# recognition of the Korean flag by the
United States ±Trx:fcirax±7reMm»^ tefix
brings to the Koreans a renewed strength in the upward struggle of their
freedom.
Words cannot express the joy and appreciation of the Korean people
to America's magnanimous act. We can only resolve to rededicate ourselves
to the service of the United Nations and to redouble our efforts to their
final victory.
