Lubwa mission at Chinsali in north-eastern Zambia began as an outpost of the Free Church of Scotland mission in Malawi. The first missionary expeditions to the Chinsali area were carried out by student teachers from the Overtoun Institute at Khondowe. The Bemba are the largest ethnic group in northern Zambia and the first Free Church of Scotland establishment among the Bemba was a school at Lubwa, opened in 1905 by the Malawian teacher David Kaunda and his wife.
