Die einzelnen Kapitel enthalten zwar zum Teil auch Bilder, die bloss einen virtuellen Bezug zur jeweiligen Station haben. Trotzdem wurde, wo nicht andere Angaben im näheren Bildumfeld stehen, die Kapitelstation als Ortschaft angegeben. Dem inneren Aufbau nach könnte eine Reise dokumentiert sein. Dafür spricht, dass eine grosse Zahl der Bilder in Format und Technik sehr ähnlich sind (kleine und quadratische, hochglänzende Gelatine-Silber-Abzüge) und in den Bildtexten meist auf die Jahre 1936 bis 1937 datiert werden. Die Ausnahmen sind zum Teil mit dem Namen eines Photographen versehen oder sind Studioaufnahmen oder Postkarten. Es könnte sein, dass diese Bilder zur Vervollständigung des Albums hinzugefügt worden sind. Ich habe keinen Hinweis darauf gefunden, dass Gustav Hannich in den Jahren 1936 und 1937 eine Reise nach China unternahm, es ist aber sehr gut möglich, dass er während der Zeit seines China-Inspektorats (1936-1939) in China war. Er könnte also nicht nur der Urheber des Albums, sondern auch der Photograph dieser durch Format und Technik definierten Einheit sein. Zur allgemeinen Datierung: Es sind zwar, wo keine Angaben vorhanden waren, keine Daten eingesetzt. Trotzdem scheint der grösste Teil der Bilder aus den 1930er Jahren zu stammen. (MS 05.1998).; Note translation: The pictures in the album are organised by mission station. The individual parts do, however, include pictures only linked vaguely to the particular mission station, i.e. they are not always taken in the mission station or its immediate environs. In spite of this the name of the mission station has been put into the "place" field if no other information is available. It could be that the structure of the album reflects a single journey. Indeed the large number of photographs with the same format and the same style of reproduction (small square glossy silver-gelatine prints) and a dating around 1936-7 suggests that this might be so. The exceptions either have the name of a different photographer, are postcards, or studio prints. And it could well be that these images have been included in the album as a complement to the photographs actually taken on a journey. No indication has been found, however, that Gustav Hannich travelled in China in 1936-7, though he was "China Inspector" of the Basel Mission 1936-9, and it quite likely that he did make such a journey at some time in the 1930s. At any rate, in the absence of other indications Hannich has been treated as the photographer of the uniform images, and the date 1936-7 has been inserted. (MS 05 1998). - I agree with Martin Schrade's comments and would only add that formally, and I suspect in practice as well, Hannich's link with the Basel Mission was ended with the outbreak of war in 1939. He was a German citizen. So his official interest in China ends in 1939. (PJ 05.2001).
