Geary, E-30-0,7 und E-30-0,8). - "Wasserträgerin. Elisabeth Jagoo, ein Babungokind, war 3 Jahre lang mein liebes Hausmädchen. Ihr Bräutigam, ein Häuptlingssohn aus Babungo, ist Lehrer in seiner Vaterstadt. Er bat mich, seine zukünftige Frau zu mir zu nehmen, damit sie etwas lerne von europäischer Arbeit und europäischer Ordnung. Elisabeth hat jede Arbeit gerne und willig getan und mit wunderbarer Exaktheit ausgeführt. Jeden Tag musste sie an der tiefgelegenen Quelle für ihre 'weisse Mutter' auch das nötige Wasser holen. Das ist zwar eine schwere Arbeit, denn die Wege zu den Wasserstellen sind gewöhnlich schlecht und weit. Aber die kleinen Negermädchen müssen diese Arbeit bald tun, und kaum können die Kinder recht gehen, so begleiten sie ihre Mutter zum Wasser und wollen recht blad auch ihre kleinen Kürbisflaschen voll Wasser hin ins elterliche Gehöfte tragen." Her future husband, a chief's son from Babungo, is teacher in his ancestral town. He asked me to take his future wife so that she can learn something about European work and European order. Elizabeth did all the work she was asked to do willingly and with a wonderful ability to do exactly what was required. Every day she had to go down to the well to fetch the necessary water for her "white mother". That is hard work, because the paths to the well are usually in bad condition, and it is a long way. But small African girls have to do this work very early on - they can scarcely walk when they begin to go with their mother to fetch water, and very soon they, too, are carrying a little calabasdh bottle of water to their parents' compound."
