"Coronation of Queen Ranavalona II Queen of Madagascar in the year Sep 3rd 1868". View of crowds gathered for the coronation ceremony at the edge of the city of Antananarivo.; This album came to the LMS collection via Robert Griffith, a missionary for the LMS in Madagascar between 1899 and 1914. The photographs date frpm circa 1868 to 1885, and comprise of photographs taken by a missionary and also commercially distributed prints purchased by the creator of the album. As well as covering people and places relating to the LMS's work in Madagascar, some photographs relate to Italy, Egypt and Mauritius, suggesting that they were taken or purchased on the journey to or from Madagascar, or on leave to Mauritius. James Cross Thorne was in Mauritius in 1883.
