Irene and her nanny, an African woman dressed in a cloth, sitting on the patio of a house, leaning against the wall.; The photograph is not listed in the list of Unyamwezi-negatives.--Irene Gaarde, daughter of Nis Hansen Gaarde.--Nis Hansen Gaarde, born November 23rd 1881 in Hjartbro, Denmark, died 1938. In 1909 he married Maria Nansen and the couple took up missionary work in East Africa the same year. From 1909-1910 he was stationed in Kitunda, in 1910 he started working as a missionary at the railway under construction in Morogoro-Tabora (he was stationed in Manyoni near Kilimatinde). His first wife died in 1910. In 1912 Gaarde married his second wife Anneken Andsager in Dar es Salaam. In 1912 Gaarde became head of the mission station in Kitunda, in 1913 he became head of the mission station in Tabora. In 1926 he was appointed mission superindendant in Sikonge. In 1927 he went on holiday to Europe and returned to Unyamwezi only in 1937.
