Title	African loggers having a rest, Machame, Tanzania, ca. 1900-1914
Description	"Rast der Holzfäller unserer Missionsstation Madschame im Urwald, Deutsch-Ost-Afrika." ("Loggers of our mission station in Machame having a rest in the rainforest, German East Africa."). A group of African men is sitting at the foot of a tree amidst dense vegetation. In front of them: already felled trees.; Postcard published by the Leipzig Mission. -- Cf. stamp no. A5. Imprinted on the backside: "Im Urwald des Kilimandjaro. Die Mission muss auf ihren Stationen viel bauen, wenn die Arbeit richtig vor sich gehen soll. Dazu braucht sie Steine und Holz. Die Steine werden meistens aus dem Steinbruch gewonnen, das Bauholz aus dem nahen Urwald." ("In the rainforest at the Kilimanjaro. In order to bring the work forward the Mission must build a lot at their stations. For it, stones and timber are required. The stones are mostly extracted from the quarry, the timber from the nearby rainforest."). -- The Mission station in Machame was founded in 1893. -- Johannes Schanz (1876-1963) was a missionary of the Leipzig Mission. He served in Moshi and Mamba from 1901 to 1910. Schanz is probably the photographer.
