Diese kleinen Haustiere und geräucherte Fische, dann und wann auch Wildbret und Schnecken, liefern allein das den Missionaren zu Gebote stehende Fleisch."; Note translation: Published as no 58 in the album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer' (= 'Eighty pictures of the Goldcoast (West Africa) photographed by the missionary Fritz Ramseyer'), Neuchâtel 1895. - Caption there: "In the courtyard on the north side of the mission house. Mrs R. sits under an orange tree and feeds her hens and goats. These small domesticated animals, plus smoked fish, now and then game or snails, are the sum total of the meat available to the missionaries." - The French caption (in 'Quatre-vingts vues...') remarks that the hens and goats are small and thin. Indigenous people are restricted, in respect of meat, to fish, game and snails. - We are intended to understand, I think, that the photograph was taken in Abetifi. (PJ 7/98).
