Whether it is an adequate translation of what the writer intended is another question. It might imply, with a south German rural background, someone who has not yet assumed the full responsibility of a married adult. Or it might simply be the female equivalent of the West African expression "boy". We do not want to imply that this woman is employed by the missionaries ("house-girl", "nurse-girl"), however. And it would be too innocent simply to use the expression "young woman", though that is what these people are. (PJ 07.1998).
