Note: "a: Erntefest. Kg. Ndjoya a.s. Thron. Die Klänge des Säefestes sind verrauscht und nach den Tänzen ist harte Säemannsarbeit gekommen. Regengüsse und Sonnenschein haben getreulich ihre Arbeit getan und Ende Juli sind die Feldfrüchte reif und können eingeheimst werden. Nun ist auch die Zeit gekommen, dem König die üblichen Abgaben zu entrichten. Je nach dem Reichtum gibt ein Hofbesitzer viel oder wenig Naturalien ins Häuptlingsgehöfte ab. Wie reich muss wohl ein Herr sein, wenn er 400 Körbe (1 Korb - 1 Zentner) Mais, 400 Körbe Durrhakorn und 200 Feldratten (eine Art Kaninchen) abliefern muss! Solche Abgaben sind gar nichts Seltenes, und wir bekommen einen kleinen Begriff von der Grösse der Äcker und Farmen unserer freien Herren; die Abgaben sind geregelt, es weiss jeder Herr, was er jedes Jahr abzugeben hat. Die Abgaben eines Jeden sind jedes Jahr dieselben, nur kommt es vor, dass bei einem Missjahr der König öffentlich bekannt machen lässt, dass die 'Steuern' reduziert würden. Da herrscht dann grosse Freude beim sorgenvollen Völklein und man lässt den 'gerechten und graden Mann' doppelt hoch leben! - Für alles, was dem Häuptling abgegeben wird, will er seinem Volk auch gern eine Freude machen, Er lässt, nach der Ernte, einen Festtag ausrufen, einen Festtag für alles Volk! Das ist das grosse Erntefest! Wie freut sich da Klein und Gross auf den festlichen Zug! Wie schmücken sich die Frauen und Mädchen prächtig zum fröhlichen Feste! Wie froh sehen auch die armen Sklaven diesem Tag entgegen, der ihnen erlaubt ein Mal zu feiern und sich furchtlos unter die Festmenge zu mischen." (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. E-30-0,6). - "b: Die Frauen des Häuptlings allein haben in diesen Tagen alle Hände voll zu tun, denn sie müssen für die Festteilnehmer, die oft weit, weit herkommen, kochen. The sounds of the Sowing Festival have died away, and after the dancing there is hard work to be done on the farm. Showers of rain and the sunshine do their work too. At the end of July the crops are ripe and can be brought home. The time has also come to set aside the customary dues for the King. According to his wealth the owner of a farm gives little or much to the chief s compound. How wealthy a Lord must be, if he has to hand in 400 baskets of maize (1 basket = 1 Zentner), 400 baskets of Durrha corn and 200 Field Rats (a sort of rabbit). Dues on this scale are by no means rare, and so one gets an impression of the size of the fields and farms held by the free lords of this kingdom. The dues are exactly regulated. Every lord knows what he has to hand in every year. The dues remain the same from year to year, but if there has been a bad harvest the King officially announces that the taxes will be reduced. When that happens the worried little people [sic] expresses great joy, and they call for three cheers for their righteous and upright King. Every time the King receives something, he likes to offer pleasure to his people. After the harvest he appoints a day for a harvest festival. That is a festival for all his people. Great and small enjoy the festival procession. How the women and girls decorate themselves for this happy day! How glad the poor slaves are about this day too, for they are also allowed to celebrate and join the festival crowds with no fear. (A.
