A Network Perspective of the VLSI Circuit Requirements of
Spread Spectrum Multiple Access
Andrew J. Viterbi,
Chief Technical Officer, QUALCOMM Incorporated
To properly assess the physical layer requirements of a multiple access wireless network,
and consequently the VLSI circuit implementations, it is necessary to address the
fundamental problems posed by multi-cellular wireless communication. These include
frequency reuse, power control, handoff between cells, diversity and source variability.
This presentation will discuss digital signal processing solutions and system enhancements
currently implemented, which were made possible by recent major advances in VLSI
circuit technology.
