Dear Professor Viterbi:
This January the journal "Information and Control11 will begin
the tenth year of publication. As you probably know Information and
Control is devoted primarily to papers in information and coding theory,
automata theory and theory of formal languages, control theory and statistical communication theory. However, it also publishes papers of
theoretical interest in various other facets of information and control
such as pattern recognition, inductive inference, physical information,
etc.
Within these last few years Information and Control has increased
in frequency of publication and in the number of papers received. The
emphasis has shifted somewhat toward automata theory and control theory
and away from information and coding theory. However, the range of published papers is very wide. We are still willing to publish any good
paper of relevance to information and control. Aside from such changes
I feel that the quality of papers received for publication has improved
markedly and of course it is this trend which is the most significant
and encouraging.
The publisher and I have agreed that this anniversary would be a
good occasion to change and to strengthen the Editorial Board.
Accordingly, I am writing to ask whether you would be willing to
serve as a member of the new Editorial Board of Information and Control.
Your agreement would be very helpful in enabling us to maintain and hopefully to improve the quality and usefulness of this journal.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest opportunity.
ME/jb
Sincerely yours,
MurraylEden
