Ms. Cathy Cosgrove
Campaign Director
Boston Latin School Association
41 West Street. 6th Floor
Boston, MA 02111 August 12, 1999
Dear Cathy.
I am pleased to advise you that I am making an irrevocable pledge of $2,000,000 to the Boston Latin
School Association (BLSA) for the Pons Privatus Capital Campaign. This grant is to be applied toward
funding technology through the endowment of the position of technology director and for the funding of
other technology programs at the Boston Latin School. In recognition of this commitment. I understand that
the Association will name the Andrew Viterbi Director of Technology and the Andrew Viterbi Computer
Center in my honor.
I am arranging for the transfer of four yearly payments of $500,000 each to the Boston Latin School
Association according to the following schedule:
Year 1 payable by December 1999:
Year 2 payable by December 2000;
Year 3 payable by December 2001
Year 4 payable by December 2002
It is my intention that the first payment of $500,000 be used for recruitment and general start-up costs, with
the remaining $1,500,000 used to endow the directorship and support the program. In the unlikely event
that the role of technology changes and these funds are no longer needed for the specified purposes, the
funds may be used for BLSA's general charitable purposes, provided that the BLSA. when deciding how to
disburse these funds, will consider my intentions in making this gift and continue to provide appropriate
recognition.
The funds for this commitment will be disbursed according to my recommendations for the allocation of
funds held in the Viterbi Family Philanthropic Fund of the UJF Community Foundation of San Diego
County. By a copy of this letter, I am requesting that the Executive Director of the Foundation disburse to
the BLSA the first payment currently and the three additional payments at yearly intervals.
Please acknowledge this commitment in the following manner for publication purposes:
Andrew Viterbi. Ph.D.. Boston Latin School Class of 1952.
I would appreciate being informed of the progress in recruiting the director of technology and to learn of
her or his credentials. I look forward to the success of the first capital campaign to benefit the Boston Latin
School.
Sincerely,
Anjj^v
Viterbi
