Dear Andy,
It was a big thrill for Philip and me to see
your name and position at such a successful company.
We have all aged a little since we graduated from BLS
in 1952 - but at least we are recognizable to each other1.
We still live at the same house in Brighton.
Indeed we will be moving our office there this Spring
because our downtown office is being completely redone
by new owners, who will merely double the rent. At least
our commuting time will be minimal.
Philip and I are still practicing law and have been
involved with the Consulate of Chile for over twenty-five
years - work which we will, I hope, be able to carry on
for many more. I am now the longest-serving consul in
Boston, which gets me absolutely nothing; but the Government
of Chile, with some urging, did make me a Grand Officer of
the Order of Bernardo OfHiggins at a ceremony at the Downtown
Harvard Club of Boston in September 1999, where the First
Lady of Chile pinned on the new insignia. Philip and I both
were Knights Commander of the same Order. I hope they'll
be equally generous when Philip's twenty-fifth rolls around
in 2007. We spent thirty years in the Reserves and I retired
as a Captain and Philip as a Colonel.
With kindest personal regards and best wishes, I
remain, as ever,
LLIAM GARBER &
Consul de Chile
P.S. If time allows during your next visit to Boston, perhaps
we can have lunch; and if you need contacts in Chile, let me
know.
