Leonid Nikolaevich Andreev, 1871-1919. Prose writer, dramatist and publicist. Born 9.VIII (21.VIII, O.S.) 1871 in Orel, died 12.IX in 1919 in Mustamäki, Finland.; CHRONOLOGY: 1897 graduated from the Moscow University Faculty of Law; 1901 became close with Gorky and the circle of writers connected with the publishing house "Znanie"; in the same year "Znanie" published a collection of his short stories that were very popular; 1905 - after the revolution Andreev parted company with Gorky; 1907 -1909 - he edited the literary-artistic almanac "Shipovnik" (Sweetbriar), which was conceived in opposition to Gorky's Znanie; During the first World War, Andreev took part in the pro-war newspaper "Russkaia volia" (Russian Will); 1917 - he actively opposed the Bolshevik seizure of power and lived in exile in Finland where he died in 1919.
