Abstract | The goal of this dissertation was to understand how autoimmune arthritis impacts young adults’ ability to participate and engage in daily activities. This research was designed to explore activity engagement from several angles using a mixed methods multi-phase design, which included three approaches to measuring activity quantitatively and two forms of qualitative analysis. In doing so, this dissertation explored two specific questions: (1) What does activity engagement look like for young adults with arthritis? and (2) What factors influence the decisions of young adults with arthritis to participate in chosen activities, which include both their mundane everyday activities and those that contribute to their wider biographical narrative? The results of this dissertation adds to current knowledge of how autoimmune arthritis impacts functional performance of meaningful activities, as well as how arthritis self-management interacts with everyday routines and life choices. Moreover, this research makes important contributions to the existing gap in research specific to young adults with chronic illness and provides a starting point for intervention development tailored to their clinical needs and lifestyle preferences. |
