PRESS RELEASE Contact: Ruth Todcsco 91 8/299-1 070 No Bad Women-Just Bad Laws Margaret Prescod 213/221-1698 Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders- For Immediate Release A press conference will be held Sunday, March 2, at 1:15 PM at the RUN/WALK FOR WOMEN launching National Women's History Week in Riverside Park, 19th St. & Riverside Dr. near Denver, to protest police footdragging in West Coast serial murders investigations and lack of accountability on the part of the media in reporting the crimes. "This is the largest group of serial murders in the history of this country and there has been no national outcry," said Margaret Prescod, co-founder of International Black Women for Wages for Housework and a spokeswoman for the U.S. Prostitutes Collective. In Los Angeles, 16 women have been killed, all but 2 are Black. Police and media made the murders public only last fall after two years and 10 women deed. "Although the attacker has been labeled a 'prostitute killer,' our view is that he should be labeled a 'killer of women.' We do not want a repeat of the Green River Murders-- the unsolved serial murders of between 45 and 90 women in the Seatt!e,Wash., area," she said. Ruth Todasco, coordinator of Tulsa Wages for Housework and spokeswoman for No Bad Women- Just Bad Laws, said "We are appalled that we are just now learning of the LA serial murders and others, 7 women in Oakland and 5 in San Diego. We can't help but notice that only now in Tulsa have 6 attacks on women beginning last November been made public and a description of the 'Expo Square rapist' released. We find this delay and lack of accountability on the part of the media, wherever it happens, shocking and endangering to women's lives." The RUN/WALK FOR WOMEN is sponsored by No Bad Women-Just Bad Laws Coalition; Tulsa Wages for Housework; North American Network of Women Runners; Tulsa Poetry Alliance; Okla. Local 7 of the National Writers Union; Tulsa V/omen's Alliance; US PROS (U.S. Prostitutes Collective). The event is endorsed by Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders; Coalition Figkting Back Serial Murders; International Black V/omen for Wages for Housework and the International Wages for Housework Campaign; Alliance for the Safety of Prostitutes (ASP Canada); International Prostitutes Collectives (English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP) and Trinidad & Tobago Prostitutes Collective).
