Striking janitors, police clash From staff and news services At least 40 people in a crowd of hundreds of striking janitors and their supporters marching toward Century City Friday were arrested in a violent confrontation with police, officials said. The mostly Hispanic janitors are working with the Service Employees International Union to organize a union at International Service Systems, which cleans buildings in Century City. About 200 janitors and their supporters marched from a 12:30 p.m. rally at Rox- About 40 arrested near Century City bury Park in Beverly Hills, and headed west along Olympic Boulevard to Century Park East, where they met a line of police in riot gear. Police told the marchers they were assembled illegally, and had to disperse, union spokesman Stephen Lerner said. Marchers were confused, he said, because they had met with police and city offi cials earlier, and been assured they could march on the sidewalk. "People linked arms and started to march, and police started flailing with billy clubs at everybody," Lerner said. "They waded into the crowd with billy clubs and beat people sitting down." Lerner said marchers had planned ahead of time to sit down peacefully if police began to arrest them.
