California 90008 213 299-9660 FAX 213 299-0618 Mr. Warren Christopher Chair Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department O'Melveny & Myers 400 S. Hope Street Los Angeles, CA 90071 Dear Warren: Affiliated with The National Urban League Member, United Way, Inc. Contributions tax deductible. The Los Angeles Urban League commends the Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department for its outstanding, bold and comprehensive report. If implemented, the Commission's recommendations will bring about urgently needed structural reforms and significantly reduce the rampant acts of brutality and racism evidenced by the brutal Rodney King beating, and change the current climate within the Los Angeles Police Department. It is imperative that all of these reforms be implemented in the very near future. Regrettably, Chief Daryl Gates' initial response and behavior have been very detrimental. However, the future of our extremely racially and ethnically diversified city depends upon the implementation of the Commission's entire package of recommendations. The Urban League will be an active and constructive participant in this process. We look forward to working with the Independent Commission and other private and public sector leadership toward that end.
