Much work and some money will be needed to correct the erosion of our meacow land and stream banks. Check dams need to be built on our land and the U.S. Forest Service land around us to store and regulate the water flow. If built properly these dams will appear as natural granite phenomena which form pools of water in current stream beds. Those pools will increase upstream water storage and will reduce the erosion and silt flowing into lower lakes. The many results of the check dams will be positive. A more even water flow will result in less water being released to the ocean during the . wet years. Additional wildlife habitat for trout and water fowl will be created. The reduced silting of lower lakes and reservoirs will help to maintain existing supplies of water for irrigation and future hydroelectric power generation at Pine Flat Dam. Finally, the even water flow will reduce the ongoing erosion of our meadow, the pools of water we create will raise trout, and the entire area will be more beautiful. With the controled water flow we should even be able to rebuild the meadow. If there is anything that your department can do to assist us in this project, it would be greatly appreciated. We will certainly need your help and expertise to plan and execute a project to correct this enormous problem. Sincerely, -14-
