Title |
Aerial view of Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery and the Brunton Studios, ca.1922-1924 |
Description |
Photograph of an aerial view of Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery and the Brunton Studios, ca.1922-1924. The cemetery is in the foreground, and there are several narrow, winding paths that make their way through the grounds. The left side of the cemetery is dotted with trees, headstones, tombs, mausoleums, a lake and the Hollywood Cathedral Mausoleum (a large white building), while the right side is empty except for the paths. The movie studios are in the upper left quadrant of the picture, built on forty acres that once belonged to the cemetery. Beyond the studios are open fields, while on the right side of the image is a residential area. Additional information: The Hollywood Cathedral Mausoleum was completed in 1922. The new purpose built bell tower for the Otis bells has not gone up yet at a new entrance further along Santa Monica Blvd to the west. It will be built in 1925. The only entrance is guarded by the extant chapel to its left. The head grounds-keeper's cottage is to the right of the entrance. In the distance is the 26 acre Brunton Studios, on land sold to them by the cemetery association. Across Melrose is Billy Clune's studio at the southeast corner of Melrose and Van Ness. It is now Raleigh Studios. The land for the cemetery was sold to James Lankershim and Issac Van Nuys by the Gower family who had owned the Gower Ranch since 1869. C.C. Pierce was married to the Gower's youngest child for more than 50 years. The Gower family and C.C. Pierce are buried at Hollywood Forever, as the cemetery is now called in Section 7. |
