Description | Photograph of a map of California showing the trans-continental stage lines that existed in 1858, with a list of California towns on the Great Overland Mail Route, [s.d.]. Prepared for the Overland Mail Centennials, 1957-1958; the reverse side has further information including portraits of John Butterfield, founder of the Butterfield Overland Mail, and James E. Birch, founder of the first Overland Mail.; CHS-31298 depicts routes such as the Great Overland Mail, Great Salt Lake Mail, San Diego-San Antonio Mail, Stockton-Albuquerque-Kansas City Mail, as well as General Kearny's Route in 1846 and local stages. Wagon roads, railways, and cities are also indicated. A list of 54 stops on the Great Overland Mail Route is visible at top right.; CHS-31298A depicts the "'Jackass' Line, 1857", the "Butterfield Line, 1858", as well as stage, steamer, and railyway connections. The map spans from California to Louisiana, yet state lines are not visible. The "Great American Desert" is depicted at center above what would later become Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.; Towns on the Great Overland Mail Route include: Clarks, San Mateo, Redwood City, Mountain View, San Jose, Seventeen Mile House, Gilroy, St. Louis Ranch, Lone Willows, Temple's Ranch, Firebaugh's Ferry, Fresno City, Elk Horn Springs, Whitmore's Ferry, Visalia, Packwood, Tule River, Fountain Springs, Mountain House, Posey Creek, Kern River Slough, Sink of Tejon, Fort Tejon, Reed's, French John's, Widow Smith's, King's, Hart's, San Fernando, Cahengo, Los Angeles, Monte, San Jose, Chino Ranch, Temescal, Temecula, Tejungo, Oak Grove, Warner's Ranch, San Isabel, San Pasqual, San Felipe, Vailecito, Palm Springs, Carisso Creek, Indian Wells, Alamo Mucho, Cook's Wells, Pilot Knob, Lassator's Ro., Julian's Ranch, William's Ranch and Ames' Ranch. |
