CqmBa / /e<j>. /r ' - .•>• ^ EDITORIAL THE STRUGGLE The Mozambique National Democratic Union (UDENAMO ) notes with satisfaction that everywhere in dependent Africa, the struggle of our people is developing inspite of the difficulties of the neocolonialist period and the intrigues of the imperialists and their African stooges; whose aim is to sow seeds of division. Our analysis points to the fact that the present balance of forces in the world is on the side of those peoples who are struggling to improve their lot morally and materially and achieve genuine national independence, democracy, progress and peace. This powerful change has come about as the result of the tremendous development of the national liberation in Africa, Asia and in Latin-America, and the action of all other forces making for peace and progress in the world. In these new circumstances, we stoutly re-affirm our unshakable faith in iinal victory for the struggle our several people are making towards the total independence and unity of Africa. • - Our study of the situation in our country - Mozambique-revql that; while the other colonial powers are folding up their camps in Africa, Portugal is clinging to an imperial past and glory that is no longer in existence. Bypursuing a blind and wholly untenable policy, Por. tugal instead of working for the peaceful solution to the conflict with the people of Mozambique; the Portuguese colonial administration intensifies its methods of repression against the indigenous African population by reinforcing military apparatus and the P. I. D. E. ( Political police ) causing the massacre of the population, arresting and torturing Africans, using intimidation, social degration, bribery and corruption. From this analysis we have been led to the conclusion that ; a) Such anachronistic attitude against humanity and the march of history obliges our movement to devise and use appropriate means for self-defence and national liberation b) The policy carried out by the Portuguese government in our country is a policy of national massacre and social misery with its vast array of repressive fascist laws, leading to the suppression of every form of democratic freedom, is contrary to our peoples' deep aspirations towards genuine independence, true democracy and social emancipation. c) Conscious of the fact that we represent the legitimate aspirations of Our people towards independence, democracy and progress; conscious of the fact that we represent in our country genuine African revolution we shall continue uncompromisingly the responsibilities that history has placed upon us. - 1 - v
