4k i L UNIAO DEMOCRATICA NACIONAL DE MOCAMBIQUE (Mozambique National Democratic Union) (UDENAMO) 5, Ahmed Heshmat St., Zamalek, Cairo, U.A.R. 22nd August 1963 PRESS COMMUNIQUE The political bureau of the Mozambique National Democratic Union (UDENAMO) takes this opportunity to clarify its position regarding numerous statements that have been reiterated by Eduardo Mondlane the American tailored leader of the Mozambique Liberation Front. Statements whose aim is to create in the mind of international opinion the belief that the UDENAMO is hostile to the principle of Unity and the formation of a "National Liberation Front." In the course of a conversation which they had at Addis Ababa with this Eduardo Mondlane, a leader who preaches with insistence the sermon of unity of action with the UDENAMO the president and vice president of the UDENAMO, clearly defined the position of our party concerning the formation of a genuine ITational Liberation Front for the liberation of Mozambique. Conscious of the decisive stage which has been attained in the struggle to liberate our country from Portuguese foreign domination, the UDENAMO desires that the Mozambican Nationalist movements recognise the necessity of going past the stage of moderation in order to engage in positive action. A purely political "common front" would have no decisive effect on the evolution of the liberation struggle of our people. Only integration in the heart of a homogenious political-military formation or the addition of fighting forces welded in a single anti-colonialist and imperialist combat front can permit the Mozambican nation to recover its freedom as rapidly as possible. The National Unity which Mondlane and certain members of is clique are preaching with insistence can only result when there is a genuine and fruitful collaboration between struggling brothers who have common aspirations and who co-operate fraternally and frankly to the exclusion of any attempt at mutual denigration and destruction. National Unity should reflect a meeting of the minds and a common desire to work for the total liquidation of colonialism, imperialism and neo-colonialism in all its forms and manifestations and towards the construction of a sovereign and prosperous
