v/ Mozambique Institute (Instituto Mopambicano) Institute (Inst: P. 0. Box 20773 Dar es Salaam Tanzania, East Africa 1 September 1965 REPORT The Mozambique Institute has just celebrated the second anniversary of its early beginnings, and this seems an apropriate occasion for making a report on recent developments in our programmes. Since our last report, the Mozambique Institute has received a very generous grant from the Swedish Agency for International Assistance. These funds were designated for the general educational purposes of the Institute, and for the purchase of a new building which has been equipped and opened as a hostel for the girl students of the Mozambique Institute. So for the first time the Mozambique Institute is able to house all of its students, and to unite the student body in a healthy, organised programme suited to their best interests. The grant was presented to the Institute by Mr. Knut Granstedt, Charge d'Affaires of Sweden in Dar es Salaam, at a ceremony at the Institute on May 15, and was accepted by the Honourable Mr. Eliufoo, Minister of Education in the Tanzania Government and Honourary Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Mozambique Institute. Other news of major interest since our last report is the establishment of a full medical programme at the Mozambique Institute. With the financial support of a group of religious organisations, we have been able to add to our staff Dr. Helder Martins, a Mozambican doctor who received his medical degree in Lisbon and has practiced for a number of years in North Africa.4 He is duely registered by the Tanzania Government to practice Medicine. Dr. Martins has set up a programme to provide medical services to refugee students, and within a short time we hope to be able to build a small, separate house on the Mozambique Institute grounds for the medical programme, which will include a small laboratory for carrying out simple tests. Dr, Martins works with a young Mozambican medical assistant, and their services are available exclusively to refugees, including, of course, the Mozambique Institute students and 'all of the students at the African-American Institute refugee school regardless of nationality. Dr. Martins is also establishing an informal programme to train civilian nurses aides who will work with refugees and with the civilian population within Mozambique. In order to describe the developments and changes in our programmes over the past months, we will give a description of each programme as it operates at present and our plans for the immediate future. IN DAR ES SALAAM Since our last report, there has been a sizeable increase in the number of students at the Mozambique Institute in Dar es Salaam. At this moment, there are 92 students resident at the Mozambique Institute hostels in Kurasini, and new arrivals are expected within the next few days, but within this month, a number of students will leave to go overseas on technical school scholarships. However, the arriving students vastly outnumber the departing students, and the overall population of the Mozambique Institute is increasing at a remarkable rate.
