Box 20773 Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 10 March 1965 ikiCKGROUaD IifaXXUua'lOK AinD PxwOGELoS Now that the Mozambique Institute has truly begun to function as a hostel &xx(L teaching institution, I would like to inform the Officers of the Association of its programmes both within and outside Dar es Salaam. It is also important for the Officers to understand the relationship of the Mozambique Institute to other educational organisations and its successes, its problems and its hopes for the future. The Mozambique Institute is a duly registered society under Tanzanian law with Registered Trustees under the supervision of the Registrar of Societies of the Tanzanian Government. It is not registered as a school for it was decided earlier, in cooperation with the education officials of Dar es Salaam, that it did not perform the functions of a proper school. The Mozambique Institute has a Constitution with By-l£W3, which were drawn up under the supervision of the Mozambique Institute's lawyer, Mr. Grimble. The Officers of the Association of the Mozambique Institute are: The Honourable Mr. Eliufoo, Minister of Education; The Honourable Mr. Swai, Minister of State for Planning; Dr. Chagula, Principle of the University College, Dar es Salaam; Mir. Karimjee, Chairman of the Board of the University College, Dar es Salaam; Miss Junod, Professor of Social Work at Makerere University; Mr. Eldridge, Director of the African- American Institute, Dar es Salaam; and Mrs. Mondlane, Director of the Mozambique Institute.* The Registered Trustees are Mr. Swai, Dr. Chagula and Mrs. Mondlane. There is a Seal of the Mozambique Institute. The purpose of the Mozambique Institute is to help in every way possible young Mozambicans, who are refugees from their homeland, to achieve as rapidly as possible the highest level of education they can attain. THE MOZAMBIQUE INSTITUTE: GENERAL ORGANISATION OF THE HOSTEL IN DAR ES SALAAM The Mozambique Institute first began to function primarily in the areas of secondary and university education for Mozambicans. However, during the past eighteen months, it has become increasingly apparent that an entry into the field of primary education is an unavoidable necessity. Still, in Dar es Salaam, the emphasis remains on the secondary level. Today, there are fifty-two students and four teachers living at the Institute. (There are also six girls who are living outside the hostel but v/ho attend Institute classes.) All of the students participate in at least one of the educational programmes of the Institute. Since the students when they enter the Institute are at different academic levels, it has been necessary to divide the * and the Honourable Mr. Kassum, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Irdustries, Mineral Resources and Power
