THREE YEAR WORKING BUDGET 3. 9 OCTOBER 1964 The figures are based on the lowest available wholesale prices for clothing of reasonable quality. The cost of this clothing for one student for one year would be shs 114/50. MEDICAL The Mozambique Institute has been taking care of the medical needs of its students over the period of the last nine months. This has been done by retaining a private doctor at a set fee per student per month. When possible advantage has been taken of free clinical care for such things as TB tests, hospitalization, etc. The doctor provides a good portion of the medications as part of his service, but it is necessary to purchase additional medicines, eye glasses and other items. On the basis of our experience, we feel it is safe to budget for an expenditure of shs 3/= per student per month for all of these expenses. UTILITIES AND SUPPLIES The funds for the maintenance of the hostel and for utilities are a very important part of our budget, although they are not a very exciting facet of our program. We have received estimates from wholesalers for the provision of supplies and equipment. INSURANCE The budget for insurance applies only to the hostel building in Dar es Salaam. COOKS The cooks will be the only outside workers employed by the Institute, since the students themselves are expected to do the cleaning and general maintenance of the building. HOUSING ALLOWANCES FOR TUTORS It is the intention of the Mozambique Institute to hire five Portuguese-speaking tutors v/ho will work with us both in the secondary and primary programs. At the hostel we v/ish to provide a tutoring service for the secondary school students v/hich will complement and accelerate their v/ork at the refugee school. They will also be able to tutor refugees who arrive in Dar es Salaam in the middle of the term and prepare them to enter school at the beginning of a new term. We plan that the tutors will help in the supervision of the teaching in the primary program at Bagamoyo, and be closely involved in the development of that program. They will also be valuable as translators and in the general cultural program which we plan to carry out at the hostel. We are seeking funds for their transportation to Dar es Salaam and salaries for these tutors* It will be necessary for the Mozambique Institute to provide the tutors with housing. The budget is based on local rents. THE PRIMARY PROGRAM The primary program as it is currently carried on follows the basic educational course existing within Mozambique, with the addition of social sciences. The primary student must satisfactorily complete the material given in four years in a government school within the Portuguese system, except that we Ml.
