PROGRESS AND PLaNS, 1963-1964 - Page 13. Pinancial Support The need for the v/ork of the Mozambique Institute becomes greater as the number of refugee students in Dar es Salaam increases. Our hope is that the time that Mozambicans must spend in Tanganyika and other countries before they can return to a free Mozambique will be short. But it is during this period that every opportunity must be made to help prepare these young men and women for the responsibilities of the future, so that they may face them with informed minds and pioneering hearts. It is our earnest hope that the Pord Poundation will continue to lend its support to the Mozambique Institute for the coming fiscal year. We hope that the generosity of the Pord Foundation can serve as a back bone for our programme's continuation, but v/e also hope to interest other organizations in providing funds for special programmes and for the support of specific students. While working hard to solve the problems presently confronting us in Dar es Salaam, the Mozambique Institute has sought out agencies and committees that can take up specific financial responsibilities after the initial capital outlay. For instance, negotiations are in process for medical supplies and equipment to be forwarded to Dar es Salaam to establish a clinic for Mozambican refugees. We hope that it will be finalized and the shipment received in late 1964 or early 1965. The food situation is always a trying one since it is an item needing continual replenishment. During a food crisis among the refugee students, a way v/as sought to relieve the constant struggle for existence among the students. The relief agencies are often willing to help, but they can do so only when a shipment of food arrives, and this kind of aid is at best sporadic. Therefore, the Mozambique Institute is now trying to coordinate the supply of food from various agencies so that meal, for instance, can be more regularly supplied. A programme is also being organized, v/hich hopefully can bear fruit sometime in 1965, whereby many small groups can take the responsibility of supporting one or more students in the hostel. This v/e feel is necessary since the replacement costs and continuing expenses for even seventy students could be better used for capital outlay. This programme, however, takes considerable energy to organize, and it is only just starting. The tutors for the hostel are being sought. Their modest salaries are being paid by groups interested in the educational project. Housing is still a pressing problem in Dar es Salaam, and for the first year the Mozambique Institute will have to supply residences. The primary and literacy programme established at the large refugee Ctimp is an interesting project with great educational potential. With a good example set in an energetic start and rapid advance in the level of the young student, the Mozambique Institute hopes to make a liaison with other schools in Europe and the United States in order to supply school needs to these refugee students. It is a straightforward educational project and should be of interest to cooperating schools.
