PLANS aND PROGRESS, 1963-1964 - Page 6. The Library We feel that a very important facility of the Mozambique Institute will be a library to be housed in the hostel building. We hope to stock this library v/ith a wide range of reference, text and other books to compliment and supplement the students' school v/ork. We should also like to add a good collection of books on the African continent, people, history, geography and current events. This last is particularly important, since our testing of the Mozambican students has revealed a serious deficiency in their knowledge of their own country and continent. It will be important for us to have a wide selection of magazines. both old issues and current subscriptions, and cf good fiction through v/hich the students can widen their knowledge of literature and improve their language ability. We already have a start on building a library, most of our present volumes having been donated by the Books for Africa programme ( now regrettably defunct) and the USIS. We have had no funds specifically allocated to the purchase of books and subscriptions, but we hope to add such an item to our budget in 1964. Our most desperate need, and one that it is most difficult to fill, is for books and texts in Portuguese. At this time most of the students under the supervision of the Institute have Portuguese as their only fluent European language. They are not yet sufficiently advanced in their English language studies to be able to v/ork and study in English. We hope to eventually be able to procure some books in Portuguese; however, in the meantime v/e have begum an arduous and expensive programme of translating useful English texts into Portuguese and having them mimeographed for the use of the students. The Office While awaiting the completion of the hostel building, with its office space for the Mozambique Institute, it became necessary to rent an office in Dar es Salaam in which to carry on our administrative functions. Two adjoining rooms v/ere procured at the corner of Ring and Simu Streets, where we have installed our desks, typewriter, duplicating machine, etc., and in which a corner is set aside for our small library. The walls of the office have been decorated with maps and other visual aids, which together with the office furnishings v/ill eventually be transferred to the completed hostel.
