3. will recruit the assistance of as many people as possible who might be interested in presenting talks, lectures, artistic works, etc., to our students. One of the most important programmes will be the tutorial help to give the students the tremendous push needed to close the education gap between their past and the future needs of their country. We wish to invite the co-operation of overseas educational institutions in supplying some teachers in the various fields of study, who might spend a few months or a year with us, tutoring our students, or providing general intellectual stimulation to them. The selection of these persons will, of course, be subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees or Directors of the Institute. In this connection, it is hoped that both the executive director and the Board of Trustees of the Institute, in selecting the teachers and lecturers, will follow a line consistent with the traditions of Africanism or African personality and a strict neutrality in ideological matters. SOURCES OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT THE MOZAMBIQUE EDUCATION EMERGENCY FUND (M. E. E. F.) In order to provide financial support to the above programme, we have decided to establish a fund-raising body, which will function as a non-profit organization. It will be headquartered in Dar es Salaam, Tanganyika, working in close cooperation with the Board controlling the Mozambique Institute. The name of the organization will be The Mozambique Emergency Education Fund. It will have representatives in as many countries as there may be groups interested in aiding the education of Mozambicans in Africa and elsewhere. In this connection, I should point out that an initial amount of money was recently given by a humanitarian foundation in the United States of America. This money, which is £67,000 (about Shs. 470,000/-), was earmarked to pay for building the hostel in Dar es Salaam, which will houtte those students who will be studying in Dar es Salaam; pay for the salaries of the four executive officers of the Mozambique Institute; pay for the transportation of about 30 Mozambican students who may have received scholarships overseas but may not have financial means of defraying travel expenses; pay for the cost of transportation within Dar es Salaam for the boarders as they go back and forth to the various educational institutions where they will be attending school. A small part of the money will be used to assess the possibility of a general adult education programme for Mozambicans who are domiciled in Tanganyika. For the future maintenance of the programme of the Institute, we hope to be able to raise funds from various parts of the world through the Mozambique Education Emergency Fund. In order to ahcieve this, we intend to appeal to governments and private organizations in North and South America, Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, the Far East and in as many African countries as it will be deemed necessary by the Board controlling the Institute. My husband and I will be happy to co-operate in answering any pertinent questions concerning the functions and progress of the Institute. We sincerely hope that governments and organizations throughout the world will recognize the urgent need for education among our young students, v/ho are struggling toward their dream of a free Mozambique, where our people will have the human dignity they are now denied. The future of the nation being born will depend on them, and their future rests with those willing to help them help themselves. Mrs. Janet R. Mondlane P. 0. Box 20773 Dar es Salaam Tanganyika /tto
