party as to exactly v/hat we are doing* Part of the confusion is due to the ignorance of a large proportion of the population* As ycu know, most people are illiterate and they are not quite cure as to what makes what run© So it's cy job to try and create a picture in their minds as to what I am doing and why* May of our detractors have tried to throw wild oats among our members* They tried to tell them that our work is really against the speedy independence of Mozambique butfortunately, their efforts have not succeeded* Mosambicans as a whole still trust me and trust my work and believe that we are going to develop our program as speedily as we can* I try to give them this impression because this is the only way by which we can work* In the various branches of the party, there are always some individulas v/ho are trying to exploii the people in every way they can* And it is my job to try and develp programs that will give them confidence to our leadership* Simango, Nungu, lirtaka, and Chagonga (FRELIMO executives) are trying thier best to develop the programs that I have, together with them, set up for our party* They are definitely short-handed, they need support both in terms of personnel and in terms of funds* At this stage, for instance, in relation to funds, v/e are very low* Me can hardly pay our bills for even a small item as a cup of coffee or tea0***We have had to send a number of people to specific areas for cracial action to be taken and so I bad to pour all the penceo into th&t*0*oI am now making plans to go the South to make visits to various centers v/here large numbers of Mozambicans are found* This morning I had breakfast with Biship Huddleston, former Father Huddleston of South Africa and Britain v/ho is now Bishop of the Anglican Church in the Southern Province of Tanganyika* Ke has promised to give me accomodations v/hen and if I go to the South****I also had a long meeting with the members of the Central Committee (FRELIMO) who are here in Dar es Salaam to review the problems that they have faced so far and to report on my long trip© V/hen Marcellino and Leo come back we will have a formal meeting of the Central Committee in which we are going to discuss the provision of Messrs* Gumane and Mabunda and take a definite st&p about ito»*o^lso, v/e have called for a meeting for tomorrow for the young people who live at the two refugee camps here in Dar es Salaam for me to explain in general our policies and enable them to ask me questions which are relevant to their status*.I wao told by various people that the refugees v/ho come from the central and southern part of Mozambique are often confused and tend to grumble and not understand the program of the party* Ify- duty now is to try to give them a chance to understand me by giving them v/hat I might call in American jargon a "fireside talk"* And give them a chance to fire back at me**** So far as I have gathered the Kuricini School which is an African- American Institute shool is going on as predicted* However, so far that school is not provided with equipment sufficiently to be a hi^h school* It is really a make-shift kind of school and only with bettor teachers and
